Called to Something Amazing

A couple of years ago I was in university, halfway through my Bachelor in Arts & Science. I had a good part-time job, a great girlfriend, great friends, and I was doing well in school but something was missing.

We’re told, by our teachers, our parents, society, that we need to finish school, get a good job, get married, have a family and that will lead to a happy life. This isn’t a bad thing at all but it is not the only thing that can lead to happiness and what happens when we start achieving these things and realize that this happiness is shallow, unfulfilling, or empty?

We’re left wondering, “There must be more than this”.

How many of us have been in that position? I think that we all aspire to be great, to do something that’s outside of ourselves. For me, I wanted to make a difference in someone’s life, to bring joy, love, and meaning.

It was exactly at this point in my life I had received an email from someone I looked up to. At the end of the email it had these 9 haunting words:

“Have you ever thought about becoming a NET missionary?”

I was scared, hesitant, doubtful, and excited.

To give up 10 months of my life from my plans for a “happy life” was ridiculous, unthinkable, and adventurous. The thought of living out of a suitcase, giving up my cell phone, and doing frontline ministry for 10 months of my life was exactly what I wanted to do.

I was also scared at what would happen if I deviated from my plans. I was scared of what my parents would think, of how others would see me. All I could see was all the things that I would lose or miss out on if I said yes to this. I wouldn’t be able to graduate with my friends, I’d miss out on a whole year of their lives, I would be away from my family for the longest time of my life, I wouldn’t be making any money, and I would be away from my girlfriend at that time.

My NET Team (2012-2013)

We will all face a time in our life where God will ask each of us, “do you love me more than these?” (John 21:15) Just as Peter was asked, I was being asked if I was willing to give up all of my comfort, my plans, my security, for the plans that He had for me.

I had built a safe wall around my life for this goal of happiness that excluded God’s plans for me but found that it left me empty. Now here He was, showing me a new way.

Too many times we choose what we see as safe and comfortable and are left unsatisfied.

Becoming a NET missionary, means living a radical lifestyle. It means living a life outside of yourself and for others. It means putting God at the center of your life and having all of your actions be for His glory. It means living out your identity as a Catholic as Pope Paul VI says (Evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity – Evangelli Nuntiandi).

It is not a lifestyle for everyone but it is a beautiful lifestyle nonetheless. To be able to give 10 months of your life completely and unreservedly is an experience like no other. It is also amazing to see all the obstacles that God can overcome when it’s His will because we have an all-powerful God and trust me anything and everything is possible when we cooperate with His will.

No matter where you are right now in your life, however big the obstacles in front of you may seem, whatever fears or insecurities you have, know that God is bigger than that. If He is calling you to do something amazing, all it takes is for you to say yes and He will create a way. He will part the sea, calm the storms, heal the sick, raise the dead, overcome sin and death, all for you.

Nothing is impossible with God. It can only be stopped by us; our free will. God will never force or impose His will on us but if we give Him our yes, He can make something amazing happen.

So what are you waiting for? What’s stopping you? God will move mountains for you. If not you, then who? If not now, then when? If not this, then what?

It’s time to do something amazing.
